Innovation Description

CommCare is an open source, mobile platform that enables non-technical users to build mobile apps for their frontline programs across numerous sectors. The apps created provide case management, data collection, data management and serve as a job aid for complex workflows.
How does your innovation work?
CommCare is a customizable, open source mobile platform that replaces paper forms and helps to manage complex workflows, simplifying processes and reducing margins of error. CommCare is the only platform of its kind that is open source, supports longitudinal client tracking, is specialized for low-literate users, runs on Java and Android technology, runs offline, integrates SMS for performance improvement, and has an application builder designed for non-programmers. Anyone can create a mobile app and start a CommCare project, with no technical background required.CommCare is a fully customizable, open source mobile platform that replaces paper forms and helps to manage complex workflows, simplifying processes and reducing margins of error. Anyone can create a mobile app and start a CommCare project, with no technical background required. Over the past year, organizations such as USAID and publications such as the Boston Globe have recognized Dimagi for its involvement in Ebola relief efforts in West Africa. CommCare has been used to support a wide range of Ebola management needs, including contact tracing, screening, triage, diagnostics and lab tracking. Not only did Dimagi work with organizations such as UNDP and Columbia University to develop a CommCare app to help health workers in Guinea, but Dimagi staff trained over 140 health workers on the ground in Guinea, allowing them to track over 3,000 cases of people at risk for Ebola. CommCare was featured in 6 case studies in USAID’s 2014 mHealth compendium, with a total of over 40 publications recognizing CommCare for being an innovative solution in the international development sphere.
