SEE ALLToday, commercial solar sales in Yemen operate independent from humanitarian aid. This removes flexibility for the commercial market to offer subsidized products and makes it harder for humanitarian organizations to respond to conflicts, as procurement and after-sales support must be addressed anew with each program. We aim to make this more seamless through matching our local distribution network with global partnerships, including with the leading off-grid solar companis.
SEE LESSStage 3: Proof of Concept
With DIV stage 2 funding, d.light design will design and pilot Pay-GO, which combines two significant innovations: 1) an upgradeable solar power system, and 2) an integrated pay-as-you-go consumer financing technology. Upgradability enables consumers to buy only as much light and power as they need and can afford initially, then allows them to add to their initial system when they need and can afford more, without obsoleting their initial outlay.

Problem
Our innovation aims to serve the 14M people in Yemen who require acute humanitarian assistance, a population that grew by 27% just last year. This population lacks reliable energy access, as they are subject to displacement and their energy resources being destroyed. To address this, we will provide portable solar home systems and lanterns financed by humanitarian aid and consumer micro-payments. In this way, vulnerable families and business owners can safeguard their own energy future.

Solution
Our innovation is an adaptation of a successful commercial model, pay-as-you-go (PAYGO) solar home systems. PAYGO makes it possible for families with extremely low incomes to purchase life changing energy services over time. We aim to leverage PAYGO to build a scalable commercial market for solar in Yemen, while combining it with humanitarian aid, so that our distribution and after-sales channels can get emergency solar lighting and phone charging to conflict-affected families.
Target Beneficiaries
Ensuring these products are available throughout Yemen would give vulnerable populations their own power sources, reducing their dependency on power grids and fuel supply, both of which are often targeted in attacks. Our distribution method also creates much needed job opportunities.
